PROTEST AGAINST NRC BILL-IS IT JUSTIFIED?
Country is experiencing a widespread rage against NRC bill, Jamia Millia Islamia students are in the center of the protests erupted in the nation.
A protest called by the students of Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi, against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) passed by the Narendra Modi government last week, took a violent turn Sunday with police resorting to lobbing tear gas shells to disperse them. Three buses and two bikes were set on fire in the university area, followed by stone-pelting by a group of protestors who allegedly targeted residential buildings and even a hospital, and damaged several vehicles parked on the roads.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill was passed in Lok sabha (9/12/19). The bill talks about processing identification to all the immigrants from any country including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Christians, and Parsis (except Muslims). The Bill seeks to amend the definition of an illegal immigrants for Hindu, Sikh, Parsis, Buddhist and Christian immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who have lived in India without documentation. They will be granted fast-track Indian citizenship in six years. So far, 12 years of residence has been the standard eligibility requirement for naturalization. The bill is focused on providing identity to all Non-Muslim Immigrants living in India. From the past many years, the bill was floored on the assembly, finally had passed in Lok Sabha on (9/12/19) midnight assembly.
Protestants-
According to Jamia students and Jamia chief proctor, Mr. Waseem Ahmed khan, the protests by the students was a silent one, and the police entered the university campus on the force. They confirmed that the police entered the campus without any permission from the administration. “No permission was given to police, they entered the campus without the administration’s permission,” they said that the police initiated tear gas shells and resorted to lathi-charge to control the situation, over 50 people, including students and local residents, sustained injuries.
The police have registered two cases of arson and rioting in the matter and have detained over 50 Jamia students and residents of Jamia Nagar’s Haji Colony and Batla House at three police stations — Kalindi Kunj, Jamia Nagar, and Kalkaji. There were rumors that a few students had died in the violence, but the Jamia administration dismissed such reports.
Protests in Rest of India-

Hyderabad also saw a protest against CAB, Hundreds of people from different social and political organizations gathered at Hyderabad’s Dharna Chowk to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), which was passed in both Houses of the parliament. The protest, which started at around 11 am on Sunday, began gaining momentum with the crowd swelling up in the next few hours, forcing the city police to barricade the area. ‘CAB hatao’ and ‘Narendra Modi down’ were some of the slogans that were raised by protesters, many of whom were Muslims.
