RIGHT TIME TO DO MBA (BEFORE JOB OR AFTER JOB)

This is a very common question amongst young MBA aspirants, that what will be the best career choice, doing their MBA after gaining some job experience or continue it just after they’ve finished their bachelor’s degree. The answer is not so simple; there are many things which should be taken into account like what was your bachelor’s degree, what college are you targeting for MBA etc. MBA with experience or MBA without any job experience, both have their pros and both have their cons, so how to take the right decision, that my friend you have to decide for yourself.  MBA is a very popular road nowadays, the competition to score a good percentile and get admitted to a decent college has become much higher than it was before, but we should also consider the growth in number of management colleges in the past decade. It’s a dream among almost every MBA aspirant to land a seat in any good MBA college in cities like Delhi/Pune/Mumbai etc. But still, we haven’t got the answer to our initial question, whether to have some hands on job experience and then try for MBA or don’t break the flow of study and directly go for MBA after completion of your bachelor’s degree.
Let’s consider some points which might help you look clearer on what to do-
  • Bachelor’s Degree- What have you done for your bachelors is a very important question, one must take into consideration before deciding the MBA plan. If you had done some professional course like engineering or BCA etc, you can wait for a few years to take some experience and then go for MBA, but if you haven’t done any professional degree or something which is not considered in your target industry, then you should go for MBA first, by that time you can apply for some internships or summer projects which will help you landing a good college.

  • Previous college and aggregate – What was the nature of the college, from where you have earned your bachelors, was it a college with a good reputation or not, if that’s the case you can land a decent job easily and get some on the job experience in the management field and then apply for MBA. But if it isn’t the scenario then you can directly go for MBA. Also, your aggregate marks , what was the aggregate overall your period of earning your degree, if you hadn’t scored well you might not get it hard to get a good college but if you had job experience marks will not matter much.’

  • Target college- What is the college you’re targeting for your MBA, is also a very crucial question, which shall be considered on taking the decision of pursuing the management degree, If you’re preparing for the top MBA colleges I suggest you to have some job experience as well, as it will be beneficial to have as many guns in the artillery to win over the biggest targets. But if you just want to earn an MBA from any decent college you can no doubt go for it directly.

  • Industrial and economic environment- What is the current economic scenario and how the industry is evolving or going to evolve in which you’re going to work, is also a consideration one should review thoroughly prior to making any decisions, if the economic condition are favorable at present and will likely to continue same way you can easily go for job then MBA or industry is having some innovation which you should learn, so you can take time to learn the respective skill while working on job and then go for MBA.

  • Test score- This consideration is only for those who had taken any management tests such as CAT/MAT/XAT etc, if you have taken these tests, and you haven’t got the expected score or some decent percentile, then you can consider taking some time and doing job and preparing for MBA on the side, but if you got a respectable score and can get easily admitted to a decent management college then you can consider taking the admission first.

So, these were some considerations that should take into account before deciding the time to do MBA, also it’s your decision only, but remember consider every scenarios and take decision according to the changing environment and your role in it. Hope the article would have helped you in some way.
