Burger King, KFC, and McDonald’s Menus should mention calories in their Menu? Read on to be a part of this debate whether Burger King, KFC, and McDonald's should mention Calories or not.

Burger King, KFC, and McDonald’s Should Mention Calories?

New guidelines have been issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The main points of the guidelines issued by FSSAI states that restaurants or cafes with a central license or with more than ten outlets are required to mention the calorific values on their respective menu cards, menu boards, or menu booklets.

Not just this, the guidelines also says, “Additionally, reference information on calorie requirements shall also be displayed clearly and prominently as an average active adult requires 2,000 kcal energy per day, however, calorie needs may vary”

If we talk about the food market current scenario in India, there are already some ventures like Faasos, Biryani Blues, etc who already mention the calorie count of the food content in their respective build-up. But still, there are some who might have to deal with these new guidelines by trying to follow the same like Chaayos, Wow Momos.

Not to forget, not just the restaurants or outlets, the Zomato and Swiggy or packaged food industry kind of services must also follow the guidelines issued by FSSAI.

With regard to these discussions, many renowned hotel and restaurant owners and many concerned persons have come up with their various opinions regarding this hot topic of discussion.

“What is the mindset behind this? Will people come, read the calorie count, and then leave the restaurant? Or instead of butter chicken, they are going to order a salad?” Asked Gurbaxish Singh Kohli, Vice President of the Federation of Hotels and Restaurant Association of India (FHRAI).

He further added, “If the FSSAI wants to do this, it should be voluntary. In a period where we are already hit so badly, putting up these new norms… I would call it irrelevant,”

The point that is a major cause of concern in between all these discussions is that Burger King, KFC, and McDonald’s kind of outlets having limited menu options might be able to follow this calorie mentioning guideline of FSSAI, but it might not be possible for every Indian restaurant to follow the same keeping in view the wide range of menu options.
