TIME MANAGEMENT DURING THE EXAM-CAT-19

Common Admission Test is a 3 hours long, section wise computer based test, CAT exam has time limit to every section, it’s a 3 hour long test with 1 hour dedicated to every section, if one doesn’t completes certain section, it will get automatically refreshed to the next section. This process is called sectional time limit. CAT is organized every year by one or the other IIMs, This year IIM Kozhikode is organizing CAT. Time is literally of essence when it comes to the CAT exam as candidates need to stick to sectional time limits. A student should not only focus on managing his/her time while writing the exam, but also while preparing for it. And time management can only be your forte if you dedicate yourself to studying the course thoroughly and practicing well.
It should be noted that not all the questions can be solved in the CAT exam, if you have prepared extensively, you should only focus on the topics in which you are most comfortable in every section, and should focus on those questions first. There are certain strategies that can be followed at the time of writing CAT in order to manage time effectively.
Why Time management is important?
Time management is a very important constraint when it comes to writing the CAT or any other exam which has dedicated section wise limits.
  • Complete focus on a particular section for a stipulated period of time, as we get 1 hour for every section, if we don’t get focused to every section, it will result in left questions in each section.
  • Not worrying of complex mathematical formulae while solving a reading comprehension - one after the other, students tend to worry about some or the other sections or topics while attempting some other sections or topics, which just leads to not giving 100% to every section, to save this one, should make a structure of how to manage time efficiently.
  • The flexibility of dedicating shorter time span to sections that you are less confident about makes students, attempt only those questions for which they are most confident.
How to manage time during writing exam?
  • Don't spend much time on one question - Keep maximum two to three minutes for a question. If you are not able to figure out the way to solve it, move ahead to the next question. The strategy should be not to spend much time on non-MCQs as these have a high probability of going wrong, rather utilized the time in solving MCQs. All students are excellent in some and weak in some parts, so an effectively managed time will be able to see that every minute is utilized in solving those questions which will give them outcome.
  • Start with your comfortable areas – The thumb rule of attempting any exam is to start with the comfortable questions as it is expected to be less time consuming. If you get stuck in difficult ones, you will just be wasting time and will not be able to attempt the questions which would be solved easily, and will affect your overall score.
  • Leave certain questions-If you are not comfortable with some or the other topics, you should leave it, rather wasting time to solve and ending up getting negative markings. If you are attempting questions in which you are not confident it will not only waste time but also affect the overall performance.
  • Revising Time-One should always keep in mind that at the end of every section 5-10 minutes should be left for revising the question paper and also to re-attempt the questions which were left earlier for future.
