DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERCENTILE AND PERCENTAGE

Difference between Percentile and Percentage

It is a common misconception amongst students, that percentile and percentage is one and the same thing, but it’s not. CAT, MAT, XAT and other competitive management tests calculate marks gained in percentile. I believe percentile is more description and efficient in calculating the position of a particular student out of the bunch of participants. Nowadays all the top B-Schools in Delhi/Bangalore/Pune etc accepts admission with percentile only
Percentage %
If we break the word Percent it gives us per + Cent, which denotes value to per 100th of the value. In simple words, per cent is the value of a particular data out of 100. For example if in a test of 50 marks you scored 20 marks, than according to the mathematical formula, you have scored 40%. Percentage is efficient when you have to calculate marks or calculate data such as percentage increase or percentage decrease in number of voters. As percentage calculates exact data, and it is very particular to calculate any value out of the given data in ratio or proportion form.
Percentile (%ile)
To understand percentile, let me give you an example, if we assume that a student has 80th percentile on a test of 150. By this we can understand the term percentile better and know that by scoring 150 in the exam, a student has beaten 80% of the remaining class in the exam. In other words, you have performed better from 80% of the remaining class if you are scoring 80%ile. To put is simply, Percentile means if the entire range of students is divided into 100 groups, which group do you belong to.
Key differences between Percentage and Percentile
  1. Definition
Percentage is a mathematical unit of measurement that displays the answer out of a total of 100. Percentage always calculates in absolute term
Percentile is a value from which the values of percentages below it are found. It denotes your position out of the bunch given
  1. Unit
The unit of percentage is denoted by the percentage symbol as % while there is no particular unit for percentile, we have unit for percentile rank as “xth” position such as 30th, 40th, etc.
  1. Ratios.
percentage can be written in the form of ratios, whilst percentage isn’t absolute which means it can be only denotes in percentile form.
  1. Ranking.
Percentages are not based on the rank of numbers, they are an absolute term that means if you have scored 40%, and the exam is of 100 marks you have scored 40 marks.
A percentile is based on the rank of numbers; percentile distributes in sets of 100, and tells you which set you’re in.
