How to score 90+ percentile in CAT-2019

CAT 2019 is just on the corner, it is to be scheduled on 24th November.  Common Admission Test is a national level entrance test for top MBA colleges in India like IIMs, MDI etc.  Graduates from all over the country attempts the CAT, the trend shows there are higher and higher number of students is attempting CAT and other management entrance tests.
There is a common misconception, that you will need a day-night schedule to be able to crack CAT, as I would say, it is a half truth, CAT is tough but through timed study and properly managed schedule, a 90 percentile score is not very far from our hands.
Let’s analyze the strategy to follow in scoring 90%ile in each section in CAT-2019.

Verbal Aptitude – Reading Comprehension (VA-RC)
This section deals with your knowledge of English language, and how you comprehend to what it says; comprehension includes a massive part of the questions asked in this section, it may include grammatical questions, Questions on voice, tone of the article etc.
Strategy to be followed
  • Read a lot.  You have to read a lot, read everything including articles in magazines, blogs, news posts etc. Reading will improve your speed and knowledge of words. Book reading can be best option for significantly increasing your vocab.
  • Practice Grammar. Increase familiarity with grammatical norms, and try to solve as much questions as you can based on grammar and its parts like speech, active/passive voices on daily bases.
  • Increase your vocabulary. There are such terms used in the RC section that are hard to comprehend the actual tone and meaning of the same, try to learn new terms and where and how it is used.
  • Be Aware. It is observed that many a times the content in the RC part is related to some current topics in news, sports, literature etc so you should read newspapers on daily basis, it will improve your reading too, and may be it would be helpful in the GD-PI round.

Quantitative Aptitude
QA deals with the mathematics awareness and knowledge of the candidate. It tests your calculation skills and knowledge of basic concepts of mathematics.  Questions are generally asked from topics like Number system, Arithmetic, Geometry etc.
Strategy to be followed
  • Brush up Basics. The question asked in QA are based on the basic rules we learnt till class 10th, all the questions are based on those concepts only, but in a more CAT way, so you should brush up the basics to every topic.
  • Practice a lot. The best way to learn and understand mathematics is to practice it, practice as much as you can, attempt as many questions as possible, practice with books, online material, test sheets etc and then analyze your performance.
  • Time allotment. Some topics in QA section are tougher than the other,  so you should manage time so as to give the stronger topics more time and easier ones according to your managed schedule.
  • Solve mocks. There are plenty of mock test available online or if you got to a CAT coaching, take mocks continuously.  That will gain you confidence in attempting more questions per day.

Data Interpretation – Logical Reasoning (DI-LR)
DI LR deals with the candidates handling of data and interpretation of the given content, reasoning test particularly is designed to test your thinking ability, how you react to the given situation. Reasoning is the section that if you practice well, you can score considerably well amongst all the sections.
Strategy to be followed
  • Learn to study data. The questions asked in this section are generally in the form of some or the other type of graphs, charts, pies etc. You should learn to study each and every type of data and what and how the data can be interpreted with the given scenario.
  • Increase your comfortability.  It is observed that sometimes students don’t attempt the questions, is because that they don’t know what to do with the data given. The best way to not to do this is to solve every types of data on daily basis.
  • Reasoning. If you sharpen and brain enough, you would learn to understand complex questions and puzzles in a better way as you have opened up your brain to think broadly.
  • Solve puzzles. One great advice you can have is that you should take your time half an hour everyday just for solving puzzles, I know you  wouldn’t be able to understand them on the first day, but don’t give up, every puzzle will let you know a different set of questions that can asked which will increase your chances to score good.
