PREPARATION TIPS FOR QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE AND DATA INTERPRETATION SECTION

CAT 2019 is to be held on 24th November 2019, for admission in prestigious IIMs and top mba/Pgdm colleges in the country. CAT is one of the "tough to crack" entrance test in the country, the pattern of CAT is little bit of confusing nature, but if you had done enough strategic practice and know how to deal with logical problems then CAT is not that tough to crack. But hands down, CAT is the MBA entrance test with highest number of test takers, which makes it more important to understand its depths. Many top MBA/PGDM colleges in cities Delhi/Pune/Bangalore takes admission to their colleges through CAT itself.

DI or Data Interpretation is the third but highest scoring section of CAT if you had just enough practice and comfortability with the type of questions that is being asked.

Data Interpretation- An Overview

Data Interpretation section can be divided into two important parts first is data interpretation itself and second is data sufficiency.

Data Interpretation- This is the calculation intensive portion of the section. It consists of a myriad of graphs, charts and tables from which you will have to read and analyze data. The key to cracking this area is to quickly identify the key pieces of data that you will require to work on the questions asked.

Data Sufficiency- Data sufficiency usually take the form of a logical puzzle, and are in the form of a question followed by two statements. You need to answer whether you can solve the problem using the statements individually, or using both, or whether you cannot solve the problem using the information provided.

How to crack DI?

Practice a lot- like any other section, in any other competitive exam you have to practice and practice a lot, DI have some pretty complex question formation, so if you don't maintain comfortness with the type of question asked you can trip in the exam. DI is the most scoring part in whole paper if you just know the right way of doing things.

Mocks and Question Papers- Many online material can be provided to you for preparing DI, and you should make use of it, I would suggest to give at least 1 mock test a day and analyse your performance and point out your strong points and weak points and try to focus and work on them.

Understand the Questions- Usually, not all questions in a set are of equal difficulty. Specifically, most sets have a ‘counting’ type of question (How many companies have profits more than x%, how many people have incomes less than Rs. Y etc.). Most of these questions can be solved without calculation but by close inspection of the data presented. These questions designed to test a student’s presence of mind.

Read Data- A very important part of DI is to know how to read data, many a times it may happen that a lot of unwanted data is present in the set, but it don't add up with question asked so you should just know which data to qualify for using into question and which not.
