This is very heated debate amongst MBA graduates and aspirants, that what is better Coaching or self study, while preparing for MBA entrance, exams whether it be CAT or MAT or SNAP or some global entrance exams like GMAT etc. It’s a fact that all the top MBA/PGDM colleges in Delhi/Pune/Bangalore etc only take admissions through these entrance tests only, so it becomes a pressing issue amongst MBA aspirants, to how to prepare for these tests, the decision is to whether to join a big management coaching institute or prepare yourself for this life changing entrance test. The answer is simple, whatever suits your learning routine, and your learning routine might depend on more than one factor in general.
So let’s try us analyze both on a unbiased scale-
- Learning Behavior-
Coaching- There are always two types of students, those who are fast learner and those take their time and comfortability while learning effectively, those students who have a habit of learning fast as a single day coaching session may be of maximum 3 hours so you have to learn fast otherwise you can be left behind.
Self Study- The other type of students who needs to be in their comfort zone and need time to grasp on a certain subject and preparing while giving time, so they could opt for self study, as while self studying you can provide yourself with sufficient time to learn
- Time management-
Coaching- A large chunk of students who took exams like CAT or XAT, are people who are either employed or commencing their graduation, so here time issue for them may come out as a important factor while going for coaching or not going for coaching, if your working hours allows you to pursue coaching , then you should go for it.
Self study- If your working hours or your college hours does not allow you to match the coaching timings or after much exhaustion at work you’re not able to go for coaching, the best way to crack any MBA entrance exams is only by rigorous self-study, then also you will have to follow a strict schedule and stick to it, and make use of every single minute you got.
- Financial lack-
Coaching- The fees for a reputed coaching institute, is so huge it may form a hole in a middle class families, and not all parents or students are willing to take such a big risk, on a average the fees for an average coaching institute for MBA preparation ranges anywhere between 50000-90000, and in metro cities even more, but if you can afford and make it useful go for coaching.
Self Study- An average middle class salary may not be able to afford a MBA Coaching, for such big uncertainty, like most of the aspirants know they will get an average college which will also have a greater fees, so they would like to cut coaching expense, and prefer self study, that way at least they will be preparing without financial pressure.
- Past Knowledge-
Coaching- The decision of whether to go for coaching or not also depends on how much you are comfortable and knowledge with the syllabus and contents of CAT, MAT and other MBA entrance exams, If you have zero knowledge and want to start from scratch you should definitely go for coaching, a 6-9 months coaching may suffice your MBA preparation.
Self Study- You should only go for self preparation when and if you have basic understanding over the topics that are been asked in the targeted MBA entrance test whether it would be CAT/MAT/XAT etc, If you’re contained with a little or more and basic knowledge of the syllabus and contents, self study may be the option for you.
