PREPARATION TIPS FOR LOGICAL REASONING SECTION

As you were aware, the time of the year in which all the prime management institutions declare their entrance tests is in the process, and in that list CAT is on top, CAT or Common admission Test is a national level examination which is focused basically on prestigious IIMS of the country but currently there are bout 2000+ colleges which accepts admission through CAT, there are many top MBA colleges in cities like Delhi/Pune/Bangalore etc where there is the highest concentration of colleges with CAT acceptance. But it's also to be noted that one college can take admission on basis of more than one entrance test.

Logical reasoning is the part of CAT which deals with thinking and deduction ability of the candidate, there are many puzzles, and raw data that is been asked in this section. Some questions are based on calculations others aren't, while solving others you just need to deduct the statement and work accordingly, if you have enough knowledge of puzzles and questions ahead you can solve LR in less than 20 minutes.

Logical Reasoning- An Overview

CAT Logical Reasoning problems are usually ‘all-or-nothing’ type, in the sense that if you crack the problem you will have answers to all the questions that follow, and if you don’t you will not be able to answer even a single question. This is because if the logic to the problem is known to you, the questions that follow can get solved. Hence, proper selection of problems to solve first is even more crucial here than in DI. Often, students fail to solve a problem after investing 10-15 minutes on it. Since the information they have at the end of that time is not much more than that at the beginning, they cannot answer even a single question in the set and have nothing to show for their effort.

Cracking LR-

  1. Form a strategic approach- LR needs much planning than any other section, Invest some seconds over a question and study the question carefully. A brief explanation of why each choice is correct or incorrect should go into your mind. This will help in improving understanding of the statatements as well as giving the best overview of correctness and in correctness of the answer.

  1.  Don't assume- Assumption formation might be helpful in QA or DI section but not here, and this is a very common mistake made amongst aspirants. NEVER assume or use any information that the question fails to give you. This is NOT an assessment of how much you know about a subject in general! Consider ONLY the information given in each reading passage when choosing among the alternative responses.

  1.  Solve puzzles- We know that LR deals basically with your deduction and reasoning ability, so the best way to improve the deduction ability is by solving more and more puzzles, you can solve any and all types of puzzles that there is, you can get some puzzles online or offline in any good books suggested by MBA graduates.

  1.  Attention- Pay special attention to words like "all," "some," or "none" when you read the factual information each question gives you. Other qualifying words such as "other than," "only" or "unless" are important, too. These words can play a critical part in precisely specifying the facts to be used in your reasoning. Pay attention to negative prefixes also, such as non-, un-, or dis-. These can be crucial to specifying the basic facts in the paragraph.
