MBA V/S PGDM?

Why few offer MBA and rest offer PGDM?
MBA v/s PGDM?

MBA which stands for Masters of Business Administration is a Post Graduate degree which provides education in different fields of ever changing business scenarios.  One can apply for MBA by cracking one of the many management tests in the country like CAT, MAT, SNAP, CMAT etc. There are many fields in which they provides specializations like HR, Sales, Marketing, Finance etc.  XLRI Jamshedpur was the first college to offer full time MBA programme in India in 1949. There are around 4500 colleges offering MBA in India until date.
PGDM, acronym for Post Graduate for Diploma in Management is a diploma based course which offers diploma for management positions and education in business management. Many specializations courses and ordinary courses are offered under the PGDM programme. We have currently 650+ colleges offering PGDM in India.
What is the best course between MBA and PGDM? , that’s a tough question to ask , let us look deeply on the aspects of MBA and PGDM.
  1. PGDM colleges are autonomous bodies which means they are not affiliated to any university, they are independent and take own decisions.
MBA colleges are recognized by the universities and strictly follow their rules, they are not independent.
  1. In PGDM changes depends upon the real world business environment.
In MBA one single core curriculum is followed, provided by the university and will change once every 3-5 years.
  1. Fee is high in case of PGDM, as compared to MBA , Fee for many quality PGDM colleges is between 5-10 lacs. MBA institutes charge less fees as it is almost similar to university standard. The fee for MBA at government universities and colleges are low. FMS Delhi college is charging RS 25,000 for two years MBA.
  2. PGDM helps you to develop market systematic industry oriented training and awareness into real life business circumstances, soft skills as well.
MBA helps you to develop theoretical aspects of management, technical skills, and more exam oriented.
  1. PGDM colleges can select from one or many of approved exams like MAT, GMAT, CAT, XAT, CMAT, ATMA.
  2. Colleges follow university rules which are governed by the state government and they have state-level exams like TAN-CET, MAH-CET, MET-MP. And also self-conducted examinations like SNAP, TISS, NMAT, IRMA, IBSAT,  also CAT, MAT, GMAT etc.
  3. PGDM has 500+ programs while MBA has 2000+ programs.

Let’s Clarify the core difference between MBA and PGDM will help you understand which is better- MBA is a Degree awarded by universities and PGDM is a Diploma awarded by autonomous institutions.
As far as career growth is concerned, there is no difference between the two. It would depend on your performance rather than stressing on the fact whether you pursued PGDM or MBA.
Since PGDM courses are offered by institutions, they provide an upgraded and industry oriented curriculum whereas in MBA, the syllabus is rigid which is not continuously enhanced by the University also. Although it can be safely said that a degree from an affiliated university generates more brand value.
In my college, there is a provision for dual specialization PGDM which means an individual can choose two streams as per their choice whereas in MBA you can only specialize in any one stream. Even though dual specialization offers up more avenues for job but I prefer specializing in one said field and excelling in it rather than juggling two fields.
Companies do not differentiate between PGDM and MBA and both candidates are offered the same salary. So, the difference is not relevant in terms of career, CTC or further growth. But if you look at the curriculum offered then PGDM scores better than MBA as the syllabus is industry oriented and very up to date unlike MBA syllabus catered by the universities.
